The
National Plan for Teaching Swimming |
||||
| Introduction The NPTS has been developed by the ASA to provide a template for learn to swim schemes. It has been designed to assist qualified teachers whose own experience and training will enhance the implementation of the plan. The NPTS is a comprehensive, integrated, progressive teaching programme based upon sound technical and educational principles and provides a standard reference for those responsible for planning swimming programmes. All members will be issued with a pack that contains all the information to explain to the swimmers and their parents the swimming functions within the club. It includes a brief explanation of Bristol North Swimming Club's aims and policies, it's teaching structure and how swimmers progress through the various groups within the club. It also gives stroke/skill descriptors and the criteria to be met to enable that progression. Regular attendance is strongly advised and taking advantage of all available teaching sessions. This will allow swimmers to progress quickly and effectively. The Teaching Year Structure The teaching year, September through to the end of July will normally be split into 3 terms of approximately 15/16 weeks duration. Assessment of the swimmers will take place at the end of each term and approximately half way through each term. With progression through the groups within the scheme normally taking place at the beginning of each term. Attendance is vital for assessment. Progression between Groups To progress between the various ability groups, the swimmer must demonstrate the ability to achieve the appropriate ASA National swim award. National Swim Award Stage 2 National Swim Award Stage 4 National Swim Award Stage 6 National Swim Award Stage 8 National Swim Award Stage 10 National Swim Award Stage 12 Development to Squad: Pre-Competition Development Award 2 Currently there are 14 ASA National Awards, 2 for each 7 Levels, with an award issued approximately half way through each level as well as on completion. For each award to be issued the participant will be required to perform 9 out of 10 designated skills, competently and with high reliability and demonstrate the ability to perform all of the designated skills at the preceding award. Achievement Once 9 out of 10 of the criteria for the level each swimmer is aiming for is achieved and signed by the teacher, then a certificate and badge can be purchased for a small fee. The development for this allows all important aspects of swimming to be learnt in continual progression, allowing swimmers to experience what is needed to achieve quality based swimming.
