Bristol North Swimming Club - Codes of Conduct

Bristol North Swimming Club is a voluntary organisation with about 200 members, mostly children. The club is governed by the Laws of the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and has its own rules which comply with these ASA Laws. The club rules and ASA Laws are binding on all members.

The club has only one member of staff who is paid, the chief coach. The other coaches, committee members and other officials all 'do their bit' because they enjoy it and feel they are providing a useful service to the community. Clearly, these people are not going to continue to help if the behaviour of one or more individuals spoils the general atmosphere of friendliness and goodwill needed to run the club.

After consulting the Code of Conduct published by the ASA, the committee has agreed a club Code of Conduct with which all members, parents and children, shall comply.

CODE

  • Behaviour and personal conduct must at all times be of a high standard and designed to reflect favourably on the sport and on Bristol North Swimming Club. Any other behaviour is totally unacceptable.
  • The club has good relationships with other swimming clubs and expects its members to look upon other clubs in a spirit of friendly rivalry.
  • Language in public or relevant group situations must be appropriate and socially acceptable.
  • Alcohol and smoking are forbidden for athletes in accordance with ASA Law.
  • Swimmers shall follow the instructions of the team manager and coach. This includes at training sessions, galas, open meets and any other related activities and when travelling to and from events.
  • Members selected to swim in galas are a team and shall act and behave as a team, each giving of their best and encouraging their colleagues to do likewise.
  • Medication: It is the responsibility of all swimmers and parents to ensure that the Club Coach is informed of any medication taken by the swimmer.
  • Illegal drugs and substances: The use of these, even though they may not appear on the official banned list in respect of performance enhancing drugs, is none the less prohibited.
  • Any breach of this CODE OF CONDUCT will be dealt with in accordance with the club rules and ASA Law.

B.N.S.C. - Equal Opportunities Policy

Bristol North Swimming Club wholeheartedly supports the principle of equal opportunities for everyone. We are opposed to all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination on the grounds of disability, race, colour, ethnic or national origins, sex, marital status, sexual orientation or age. We believe it is in the Club's and members best interests to ensure that human resources, talents and skills throughout the community are considered when opportunities arise.

Every possible step will be taken to ensure that individuals are treated equally and fairly and that decisions on recruitment, selections, training etc. are based solely on objective and ability related criteria.

Action to Implement the Policy

In order to put this policy into practice in the day-to-day operation of the club we will:-

  • Provide training and guidance for key decision makers and those involved in personnel and management practices.
  • Monitor the existing club personnel and the application and effects of the policy.
  • Examine and review existing procedures for the recruitment, selection, promotion and training of personnel.
  • Develop mechanisms for resolving grievances about unfair discrimination and harassment.
  • Review the policy on a regular basis.

The committee fully support this policy statement. All members of the club are responsible for playing their part in achieving its objective.

Action to be taken in the event of an allegation of discrimination/harassment

Anyone who feels they have reason for complaint should refer the matter to a committee member - Rule 17 of Club rules apply.

How the issue will be resolved:

In the event of a complaint, the committee will appoint an independent sub-committee who will be empowered to make any enquiries they deem necessary and to interview all parties concerned to resolve the matter within the framework of ASA Laws and UK law.

Monitoring:

Separate forms will be distributed with membership applications requesting relevant details as in paragraph one of this document (which can be completed anonymously). The membership secretary will collate the information and pass to the committee for recording/monitoring.
